THE GERMAN BEER PURITY LAW

The German Beer Purity Law or “Reinheitsgebot” was established in 1516 by Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria and is the oldest existing law of its kind in the world. In its original form the law stated that beer could only be brewed from barley, hops and water. Yeast was not mentioned since it had not yet been identified and fermentation relied on yeasts in the surrounding air.

TOP-FERMENTED AND BOTTOM-FERMENTED BEER

Yeast is added to the fermentation tank in order to convert malt sugar into carbon dioxide and alcohol. In the case of top-fermented beers such as Hefeweizen and Kristallweizen, top-fermenting yeast is added. Top-fermenting yeast is active at between 15°C und 20°C and after fermentation settles on the surface. Bottom-fermenting yeast, which is used for bottom-fermented beers such as our Premium Export and Exklusiv Pils is optimally active at around 8° to 10°C, after which it settles on the bottom of the fermentation tank.

THE BEER BELLY ISSUE?

The belief that calories are the sole measure of a healthy diet has long become outdated. It is much more important to have a varied diet: something of everything, but not too much. Keeping this motto in mind when quenching your thirst will ensure you don’t get fat. If you also make sure you do an adequate amount of exercise, you can enjoy your beer without any fear of flab.

 

Who would have thought that a 0.2 l glass of beer (76 kcal) has less calories than, for instance, a glass of apple juice (0.2 l, 96 kcal) or that a beaker of low-fat yoghurt (200 g, 146 kcal) has more than double as many calories as the same amount of beer?

Beer not only quenches your thirst but also contributes to fitness. The easily digestible carbohydrates it contains are an optimal source of energy. Moreover, the B vitamins contained in beer contribute to beauty, health and well-being. Beer is also rich in minerals such as magnesium and potassium, which are important for muscle and nerve functions, but it contains little natrium and calcium. This combination of low calcium and high magnesium helps guard against heart disease, gallstones and urinary stones. Beer is also almost completely free of fat and cholesterol.
